denotation and connotation

Denotation & Connotation blog tasks: advert analysis

Create a new blogpost in your GCSE Media blog called 'Denotation and connotation'.

1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?
DENOTATION-
this printed water aid advertisement, a young boy(symbolic codes). dry, deserted background (technical code)
the boy has sad facial expressions(symbolic).
his clothes are dirty and old.(symbolic)
the house in the background looks small and old(technical code)

CONATATION-
the image is deliberately an extreme closeup of the boy to create a more intense atmosphere.
they presented him as sad to make the audience feel sorry for the boy and make the audience donate money in sympathy to the boy.
this brand intestinally dressed the boy in these clothes to show how bad his situation is.
they put the house in the background on purpose to show what the living condition is like and how much he needs help.

ANALYSIS-
perhaps water aid deliberately chose a young black boy to reach to the audience to feel sympathy and want to help the boy. the slogan "dig toilets not graves" was intestinally used to tell people if they don't start helping more and more people will continue to die. They exagarat5e this because they know audience will feel sympathetic and it will catch there intention as they put a photo of a young boy and that slogan together.

2) Now choose your own choice of advert from Google images. Save it to your documents, insert it into your blogpost and write an analysis using denotation and connotation, explaining what the advert is communicating to the audience.

Extension: Print advert research

Read this design blog on some of the best print adverts of all time. Choose one advert that you feel is particularly powerful in terms of its use of connotations and analyse why it is so successful

v

DENOTATION-
the printed Nike ad shows some clouds(symbolic).
there's a blue sky (technical)
there's a catchy slogan(verbal codes)

CONNOTATION-
this Nike ad shows us that if you are wearing Nike shoes you are above everyone and high in the sky if you wear Nike shoes.
if you wear Nike you don't dream about achieving things you actually achieve things.
your always achieving better as you feel higher than everyone
your on top of the world .

ANALYSIS-
the slogan shows us that you don't need to dream about anything you can just do it. it shows us that you will feel on top of the world if you wear the shoes and you can feel unreal.
